escapements
Timepiece tick controllers
An escapement is the mechanism in a mechanical clock or watch that controls the release of energy from the mainspring, converting continuous force into the regular tick-tock motion that keeps time.
The term extends to similar mechanisms in typewriters and pianos that control sequential movement.
The watchmaker replaced the worn escapement.
