verge escapement

Medieval timekeeping mechanism

A verge escapement is the oldest known mechanism for regulating a clock's timekeeping.

It uses a vertical shaft (the verge) with two small plates (pallets) that alternately catch and release a toothed escape wheel, converting continuous motion into the tick-tock rhythm.

Common in medieval tower clocks and early watches, it was eventually replaced by more accurate mechanisms like the anchor escapement.
