epic hero

Saga's central figure

An epic hero is the central figure of an epic poem or narrative—a larger-than-life protagonist whose deeds shape the fate of nations or peoples.

Odysseus, Achilles, Beowulf, and Gilgamesh are classic examples.

The epic hero typically embodies cultural ideals: courage, strength, honor, cunning.

Unlike ordinary protagonists, epic heroes operate on a grand scale, battling monsters, defying gods, or founding civilizations.

Modern usage extends the term to any protagonist facing extraordinary challenges: She considered her grandmother, who raised five children alone during the Depression, an epic hero.
