background character
Scenery with legs
A background character is a minor figure in a story, film, or game who exists to populate scenes without affecting the plot—the nameless pedestrians, café patrons, or office workers who fill out a world.
The term extends to real life for someone who fades into the background socially, present but unremarkable: I felt like a background character at my own party.
