enterobacteria

Digestive tract bacteria

Enterobacteria are a large family of bacteria that live in the intestines of humans and animals.

Many are harmless gut flora, but the group includes pathogens responsible for food poisoning, urinary tract infections, and other diseases—among them *E. coli*, *Salmonella*, and *Shigella*.

The name combines Greek *enteron* (intestine) with bacteria.
