Pseudomonas
Rod-shaped soil bacteria
Pseudomonas is the formal scientific genus name for a group of rod-shaped bacteria, italicized in technical writing as part of binomial nomenclature: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a common nosocomial pathogen.
These bacteria are metabolically versatile, thriving in diverse environments from soil to swimming pools.
In clinical contexts, Pseudomonas infections are notoriously difficult to treat due to antibiotic resistance. (Lowercase pseudomonas is used informally in clinical speech.)
