emergency shutoff
Urgent halt mechanism
An emergency shutoff is a mechanism designed to quickly stop a machine, system, or flow of material in dangerous situations.
These appear as buttons, switches, or valves on industrial equipment, gas lines, and vehicles: Hit the emergency shutoff if the pressure spikes.
The term also applies to the act itself: The plant performed an emergency shutoff when sensors detected a leak.
