trip switch

Electrical safety cutoff

A trip switch is a circuit breaker—an electrical safety device that automatically cuts power when it detects a fault or overload.

The switch "trips" to the off position, interrupting current flow to prevent damage or fire.

Unlike fuses, trip switches can be reset: The hair dryer tripped the switch again.

Common in household electrical panels.
