amber alerts
Abduction emergency notifications
Amber alerts are emergency broadcasts issued when a child is abducted and believed to be in danger.
Named after Amber Hagerman, a nine-year-old murdered in Texas in 1996, the system pushes alerts to phones, highway signs, and broadcast media with descriptions of the child and suspected abductor.
The name is also a backronym: America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response.
