vote-by-mail
Remote election participation
Vote-by-mail is a system where voters receive ballots at home and return them by postal service rather than going to a polling place.
Some jurisdictions conduct all elections this way; others offer it as an option alongside in-person voting.
Oregon has used vote-by-mail since 1998.
Also called mail-in voting or absentee voting, though absentee traditionally implied a specific reason for not voting in person.
