dragonfruits

Spiky tropical fruits

Dragonfruits are the fruit of certain cacti native to Central and South America, now cultivated throughout Southeast Asia.

The exterior is bright pink or yellow with scale-like projections—hence the dragon reference.

Inside, the flesh is white or magenta with tiny black seeds, mild and slightly sweet: The dragonfruits at the market looked ripe.

Also called pitaya.
