downwinder

Nuclear test casualty

A downwinder is someone who lives or lived in the path of radioactive fallout from nuclear testing or accidents.

The term emerged from communities in Nevada, Utah, and Arizona exposed to fallout from Cold War weapons tests: Downwinders have long sought compensation for their cancer rates.

The word extends to anyone affected by wind-carried contamination from nuclear facilities.
