dotcoms

Online company type

Dotcoms are internet-based companies, named for the ".com" in their web addresses.

The term emerged during the late 1990s tech boom and is most associated with that era's speculative bubble: Many dotcoms went bust when the bubble burst in 2000.

The word can describe either the companies themselves or the period: the dotcom era, dotcom millionaires.
