suppressive fire
Keeps heads down
Suppressive fire is gunfire intended to force an enemy to take cover rather than to hit specific targets.
The goal is to limit the enemy's ability to move or return fire while friendly forces advance or reposition: Lay down suppressive fire while we flank them.
The term comes from military tactics but appears in video games and action films.
