dingle

Small shaded glen

A dingle is a small, secluded, wooded valley or dell.

The word is chiefly British and somewhat literary or regional, evoking a shady hollow with trees: We followed the stream down into a quiet dingle.

In informal use, dingle sometimes appears as a mild, silly-sounding word, occasionally short for dingleberry.
