Sensational Victorian novel
A yellowback is a cheap sensational novel, named for the yellow paper boards in which such books were bound in the 19th century.
These were the paperbacks of their era—lurid fiction sold at railway stations for travelers: He picked up a yellowback for the train journey.
The term is now historical.
