compression ignition
Squeeze until ignition
Compression ignition is a method of igniting fuel in an engine by compressing air until it becomes hot enough to spontaneously ignite the fuel when injected, rather than using a spark plug.
This is the operating principle behind diesel engines, where air is compressed to extremely high pressures and temperatures before fuel is introduced.
The term distinguishes diesel-type engines from spark-ignition engines used in most gasoline vehicles.
