dictaphones
Portable audio recorders
Dictaphones are devices for recording and playing back speech, originally used for dictating letters and documents to be typed later.
The word comes from a trademark that became generic.
Though largely replaced by digital recorders and smartphone apps, dictaphone persists as a general term for any portable voice recorder: She spoke her notes into a dictaphone.
