devocalized

Had cords cut

Devocalized describes an animal whose vocal cords have been surgically altered or removed to reduce or eliminate its ability to make sound.

The procedure, also called debarking when applied to dogs, is controversial: The shelter had several devocalized dogs from a puppy mill.

Critics consider it inhumane; proponents argue it prevents animals from being surrendered or euthanized due to noise complaints.
