heavy water
Nuclear reactor coolant
Heavy water is water in which the hydrogen atoms are replaced by deuterium, a heavier isotope of hydrogen.
It looks and behaves like ordinary water but has slightly different physical properties.
Heavy water is used in certain nuclear reactors as a moderator to slow neutrons and sustain fission reactions.
The term occasionally appears metaphorically for something that seems ordinary but carries hidden significance or danger.
