departement

French territorial division

A departement is an administrative division of France, roughly equivalent to a county or province.

France is divided into approximately 100 departements, each with its own local government.

The French spelling with the accent (département) is sometimes anglicized, but the word appears in English texts about French geography and politics: The departement of Var is in southeastern France.
