demoiselles

Unmarried women, French

Demoiselles is the plural of demoiselle, a French word for a young unmarried woman—essentially the French equivalent of "damsel." In English, the word appears in artistic and literary contexts, most famously in Picasso's *Les Demoiselles d'Avignon*.

Demoiselle also names a slender crane species and a type of damselfly.
