demoiselle

Small blue crane

Demoiselle is an archaic or literary term for a young unmarried woman, borrowed from French where it means the same thing.

The word survives mainly in the names of creatures: the demoiselle crane is an elegant gray bird found across Asia and Africa, while demoiselle also refers to certain damselflies with their slender bodies and delicate wings.

The demoiselles darted over the pond's surface.
