churls
Ill-mannered peasants
Churls is the plural of churl, an old word for a rude, surly, or ill-mannered person.
The term originally meant a peasant or person of low rank, but now it describes someone boorish or stingy: Don't be churls—share the wine.
The adjective churlish is more common than the noun.
