declaration of rights
Formal liberties document
A declaration of rights is a formal statement enumerating fundamental freedoms and protections owed to individuals, typically by a government.
Such documents—the English Declaration of Rights of 1689, the French Declaration of the Rights of Man, the UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights—establish principles meant to limit state power and guarantee individual liberties.
The constitution's declaration of rights prohibits unreasonable searches.
