crenelations

Fortified wall gaps

Crenelations are the alternating high and low sections along the top of a castle wall or fortress—the tooth-like pattern that allowed defenders to shoot through gaps while taking cover behind raised portions.

The pattern appears decoratively on buildings meant to evoke medieval architecture: The gothic revival mansion featured crenelations along its roofline.
