crack up

Lose it laughing

Crack up has two main senses that both involve breaking apart.

To crack up is to burst into laughter, as if composure cracks: That joke cracked me up, We were cracking up the whole time.

It also means to suffer a mental or emotional breakdown: The pressure finally made him crack up.

A crack-up is the noun form for either—a fit of laughter or a collapse.

In older use, a crack-up was also a vehicle crash.
