cow catcher
Locomotive debris deflector
A cow catcher is the angled metal frame mounted on the front of a locomotive, designed to deflect obstacles—originally cattle—from the tracks.
The device became iconic of 19th-century American railroads, when unfenced lines ran through open range.
The old steam engine still had its original cow catcher.
Also called a pilot.
