counting out

Selecting by enumeration

Counting out is a way of eliminating players or assigning roles in children's games, using a rhyme recited while pointing to each person in turn.

Whoever the final word lands on is "it" or eliminated.

Classic counting-out rhymes include "eeny, meeny, miny, moe" and "one potato, two potato." Separately, counting out can mean excluding someone from consideration: Don't count me out just yet.
