counting in
Adding to total
Counting in is the practice of establishing tempo before a musical performance begins, typically by calling out beats aloud: The drummer counted in and we started playing.
A count-in gives performers a shared sense of rhythm and timing so they can begin together.
In recorded music, count-ins are usually edited out but occasionally left in for effect.
