counterpetitions
Opposing signature campaigns
Counterpetitions are petitions created in opposition to an existing petition, presenting an alternative position or opposing viewpoint on the same issue.
When a petition gains traction, opponents may circulate a counterpetition to demonstrate that support isn't unanimous: The rezoning petition gathered 500 signatures, but counterpetitions soon appeared from neighboring blocks.
