coregulation
Shared emotional attunement
Coregulation is the process by which people help each other manage emotional states, especially between caregiver and child.
A parent soothing an upset infant is coregulation—the adult's calm presence helps the child settle.
The concept extends to adult relationships where partners stabilize each other's moods: We've learned to coregulate when one of us is anxious.
In developmental psychology, coregulation is considered essential before children can self-regulate independently.
