cooee

Australian distance shout

Cooee is a loud, high-pitched call used to attract attention over distance, originally from Australian Aboriginal languages.

The sound carries far in open country: We could hear them cooee-ing from across the valley.

In Australian and New Zealand English, within cooee means within earshot or, by extension, anywhere close: There wasn't a pub within cooee of the place.
