Recessed seating area
A conversation pit is a sunken seating area built into a living room floor, typically circular or rectangular, with built-in couches or cushions arranged around a central focal point like a fireplace or coffee table.
Popular in midcentury modern architecture of the 1950s through 1970s, conversation pits were designed to create intimate social spaces that encouraged face-to-face interaction.
The realtor showed us a house with an original conversation pit from 1968.
