native grassland
Indigenous open range
Native grassland is land where grasses and other herbaceous plants grow naturally, without having been planted or cultivated.
These ecosystems developed over thousands of years and support distinctive wildlife and soil communities.
Much native grassland has been converted to agriculture or degraded by overgrazing: Less than one percent of the tallgrass prairie remains as native grassland.
