decommitment

Reversing a pledge

Decommitment is the withdrawal of a commitment previously made.

In college athletics, a recruit's decommitment means they've backed out of a verbal pledge to attend a school: His decommitment from Ohio State shocked the coaching staff.

The term applies wherever formal or informal commitments are reversed—relationships, business deals, policy positions.
