colonial settler

New world arrival

A colonial settler is a person who moves to a territory claimed or controlled by a foreign power, establishing residence in land often already inhabited by indigenous peoples.

The term carries historical weight from European expansion into the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Oceania, and contemporary political charge in discussions of Israel-Palestine.

Unlike colonizer, which emphasizes domination, settler emphasizes permanent residence and displacement: Her ancestors were colonial settlers in Virginia.
