co-infection
Two infections together
Co-infection is the simultaneous presence of two or more infectious agents in a single host.
The term appears most often in medical contexts where multiple pathogens complicate diagnosis or treatment: patients co-infected with HIV and hepatitis C, bacterial co-infection following viral pneumonia.
Co-infections can worsen outcomes or require different therapeutic approaches than either infection alone.
