circuity

Taking the long way

Circuity is the quality of being indirect or roundabout.

The term applies to physical routes that wind rather than go straight, or to speech and reasoning that arrives at its point only after unnecessary detours: The circuity of his argument lost the audience.

Legal writing uses circuity to describe unnecessarily complex procedural paths.
