chronographs

Watches measuring elapsed

Chronographs are watches or instruments that combine timekeeping with stopwatch functions.

The term literally means "time writer"—early versions recorded elapsed time by marking a dial.

Modern chronographs typically feature small subdials and pushers for starting, stopping, and resetting: His chronograph tracked lap times during the race.

The word also applies to any precision instrument for recording time intervals.
