caseback

Timepiece rear panel

The caseback is the rear cover of a watch, the removable panel that protects the movement inside.

Casebacks may be solid, transparent (to display the mechanism), or engraved with serial numbers and specifications.

Watchmakers remove the caseback for battery replacement or servicing: The jeweler popped off the caseback to inspect the movement.
