childbed

Labor and delivery

Childbed is an old-fashioned term for the condition of a woman giving birth or having just given birth: She died in childbed.

The word survives mainly in childbed fever, the historical name for puerperal fever—a bacterial infection that killed many women before antiseptic practices became standard.
