lying-in

Post-delivery bed rest

Lying-in is the period of confinement during and after childbirth, when a woman remains in bed to recover.

The term is old-fashioned, from an era when extended bed rest after delivery was standard practice.

A lying-in hospital was a maternity hospital.

The plural is lyings-in.
