chest compressions
Pumping the sternum
Chest compressions are the rhythmic pressing down on a person's chest during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), designed to manually pump blood through the heart when it has stopped beating effectively.
The rescuer places the heel of their hand on the center of the chest and pushes hard and fast, typically at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute.
This technique can maintain minimal blood flow to vital organs until professional medical help arrives or the heart resumes normal function.
