chemoreception

Sensing chemical stimuli

Chemoreception is the biological process by which organisms detect and respond to chemical substances in their environment.

It underlies the senses of taste and smell, and extends to internal monitoring of blood chemistry and hormone levels.

Cells called chemoreceptors convert chemical signals into nerve impulses: Chemoreception allows salmon to navigate back to their spawning grounds.
