checkered flags
Victory lane signal
Checkered flags are flags with a pattern of alternating black and white squares, used in auto racing to signal that the leader has completed the final lap.
To take the checkered flag is to win a race.
Figuratively, a checkered flag marks any finish or completion: We're finally seeing the checkered flag on this project.
