chapter-house

Monks' assembly room

A chapter-house is a building or room where the chapter of a cathedral, monastery, or other religious institution meets to conduct business.

The chapter—the governing body of clergy—would gather there for administrative matters, readings, and disciplinary proceedings.

Many medieval chapter-houses survive as architectural landmarks: The octagonal chapter-house at Westminster Abbey dates to the thirteenth century.
