chainmen

Survey team members

Chainmen are the workers who handle a surveyor's chain—a measuring device made of metal links used to determine distances in land surveying.

The work requires two people, one at each end of the chain, to stretch it taut and mark measurements across terrain.

The term belongs to an earlier era of surveying, before electronic distance measurement replaced physical chains.
