cayman

South American reptile

A cayman is a crocodilian reptile native to Central and South America, closely related to alligators.

Caymans are generally smaller than their North American cousins and inhabit freshwater swamps, rivers, and lakes.

The spelling caiman is equally common.

We spotted a cayman sunning itself on the riverbank.
