Clicked wooden shells
Castanets are a percussion instrument consisting of two small concave shells of wood or plastic, clicked together rhythmically in the palm.
Strongly associated with Spanish flamenco dancing, they're held in each hand and clapped by the fingers to produce a sharp, rattling sound that accents the music: The dancer's castanets punctuated each step.
